Mechanics and Energy Absorption Properties of In-situ Aluminum Foam-filled Thin-walled Tubes

    • The in-situ aluminum foam-filled thin-walled tubes were prepared by space-holder method. The mechanics and energy absorption properties of in-situ foam-filled tubes with different tube wall thicknesses were studied through quasi-static compression and drop hammer impact tests. The interaction between aluminum foam and thin-walled tubes was explored. The results show that in the quasi-static compression test, the in-situ foam-filled tube with the wall thickness of 1 mm has lower plateau stress and energy absorption, but has greater specific energy absorption. From the perspective of buffer energy absorption, the in-situ foam-filled tube with the wall thickness of 1 mm has a lower yield stress and longer stress plateau. In the drop hammer impact test, the addition of aluminum foam improves the load-bearing capacity of the thin-walled tube and makes the deformation process more stable.
